Everyone has a favorite person and mine tends to be my old man. My grandpa, Benjamin Colon, is one of the most caring, loving and understanding men that I know. I know him as Pops–not Grandad, or Grandpa, but Pops. As a little girl, I saw him as the giant at the top of Jack’s beanstalk, the Poppa Bear of the three bears, and the Genie in Aladdin’s magic lamp. He always puts his kids and grandchildren before anything in this world. He’s my role model!
My grandpa always found a way to make us happy; he made sure we had clothes on our back, a roof over our head and food on our table. When it came to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, he fed us so well that it made us bust out of our clothes to think we could take in another bite. As I walk through the door of my grandparent’s home, I begin to sense the feeling of warmth in my heart. Before I can even get my shoes off, my Pops greets me with a plate of rice with green pigeon peas, pork chops and fried green bananas. I get this feeling of happiness every time I arrive home in Puerto Rico. It’s where I spent two years of my life. This is my second home.
I’ve never met someone with a heart of gold, so precious and fragile. His love is so valuable like an old antique. There’s nothing like a wet kiss on my forehead, while my head lays on his lap. He reminds me how beautiful I am in his big hazel eyes. His bear hugs make me feel safe when I’m scared of this ugly, cruel, and evil world. His love is so unconditional like an endless river.
I never had a father figure in my life, so my grandfather was the closest person I could look at as a father. He raised me my whole entire life. He managed to stick by my side like Bonnie and Clyde. No matter what happened in my life, he was always the one who looked beyond my flaws. He makes sure I overcome every black tunnel because he only wants the best for me. It seemed like no matter what I did wrong, I was always a perfect little angel to him. He showed me how important life really was. My grandfather was always good at listening and giving advice. He was like my personal Dr. Phil where I can go to him for everything. I admired and respected his kind and gentle nature.
Thus, my favorite person in the whole wide world is my Pops. No one can ever be compared to him because he’s one of a kind. He is very loving, caring and understanding. My grandpa goes out of his way to please and satisfy the people who mean the most to him.
